11/2/17-Common Ground: Hank Meijer

Charles W. Loosemore Auditorium, Richard M. DeVos Center, 401 Fulton St. W., Grand Rapids, MI

In our divisive time, it can be difficult to imagine elected officials placing the good of the country above partisan considerations. Even so, history shows that leadership of this kind is possible. At the dawn of the Cold War, Senator Arthur H. Vandenberg, a Republican from Grand Rapids, worked with Democratic administrations to build congressional support for monumental foreign policy endeavors, including the Marshall Plan, NATO, and the United Nations.

Although the fruits of Vandenberg’s achievements endure to this day, his life and career have not received sufficient scholarly attention. Hank Meijer’s authoritative biography of the Senator from Grand Rapids corrects this gap in our understanding of American history, and it will prompt many to wonder about a Vandenberg for our own era.

The Hauenstein Center is proud to partner with the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation, and the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library & Museum to host a presentation by Hank Meijer, honoring the publication of his important book by the University of Chicago Press.
